The Arcam airDAC is an excellent way of adding AirPlay and UPnP support to your hi-fi or audio system, and we were pleased to find all the necessary cables supplied in the box. Arcam has been hard at work rediscovering their stereo heritage over the last few years. When I was getting into hifi in the 90’s, Arcam’s Alpha series represented affordable aspiration and I still look back on my Alpha 7 CD and 7R amplifier very fondly. The Arcam irDAC-II is a solid product and well suited to be at the centre of your digital audio experience. Beautifully crafted, loaded with features and producing a warm, neutral sound at an affordable price and it also looks sweet on the desktop. Arcam's irDAC-II was released a year ago to celebrate the British company's 40th anniversary. It's an updated version of the irDAC (2013), and adds Bluetooth connectivity, a headphone amplifier stage taken from Arcam's flagship A49 amplifier, support for DSD128 files, and a high-performance ESS ES9016K2M DAC chip, but eliminates the USB Type A There is no wireless access but a separate version, the airDAC, is available with Bluetooth connectivity.

We put the airDAC through its paces to see how it performed. But for the most musically engaging performance over a wide range of music, I preferred the Arcam airDAC. Conclusion. When I first installed the Arcam airDAC in my system, I wasn’t sure what to expect. At first it didn’t sound terribly impressive, but its capabilities soon made themselves known. The airDAC automatically indexed music from the hard drives, though it didn’t distinguish between hard-drive partitions and displayed duplicate songs—a minor detail. The app is extremely fast, though it is a “light” version and doesn’t display album artwork while scrolling through artist or album lists.
